Housed in a newly renovated terminal building, Sao Paulo Congonhas Airport is a busy facility that sees around 18 million passengers per year. Remaining Sao Paulo’s principal airport until 1985, when the nearby Guarulhos Airport was created to ease air traffic, Congonhas Airport is still an important hub in Brazil and continues to serve increasing numbers of passengers year on year, being used for mainly regional flights. The airport is officially known as either Congonhas International Airport or Sao Paulo International Airport. Congonhas Airport handles solely domestic flights, only serving a mere handful of Brazilian air carriers, such as Gol Transportes Aéreos, OceanAir, Pantanal Linhas Aéreas and TAM Linhas Aéreas. Passengers now enjoy new boarding lounges, located on the mezzanine level, accessed by escalators. Besides this, eight boarding bridges were installed to provide more comfort to passengers by eliminating the need to walk in the open to their flights. The terminal area was expanded from 37.3 thousand to over 51 thousand square meters. Construction of a third passenger terminal is pending, to raise yearly capacity to 29 million passengers. The new parking garage, with 61 thousand square meters, will have 3,300 parking spaces. Car rental company represented at the airport has its desk located at Sao Paolo airport. To reach the airport, take either the Ayrton Senna or Presidente Dutra highway. Facilities at Congonhas Airport are excellent and its halls have become famous locally for their stylish architecture. Inside you will find around 50 different shops, along with cafeterias and even leisure facilities. Banks with bureau de change facilities and ATMs are located at the airport. There is also a 24-hour post office in Terminal 1.
